Some Tips to Go Green With Your Lawn

So you've decided to switch from the harmful chemicals you previously put on your lawn and and go to natural solutions, great!  Make use of these green lawn maintenance tips to help keep your yard looking great -

• Start at the bottom-  First, test your soil. You should know the pH, if it's below 6.0, add lime, but if it's over 7.0, add gardener's sulfur.
• Leave it tall-  With longer grass, your roots are better protected.  Maintain the good health of your green lawn by cutting it to approximately 3 inches high.
• Careful with the water-  The majority of healthy lawns only need about an inch of water per week. When you do water, do it in the early morning hours or at night, when the roots are better able to soak up the water and none is lost to evaporation.
• Leave on the grass clippings-  After mowing, don't rack up!  Grass clippings dry out quickly and return to the soil as natural fertilizer. They'll disappear easily into the remaining grass and despite what you've heard to popular belief, they do not cause thatch buildup.  You may consider a mulching blade to help the process.
• Compost, compost, compost-  Use appropriate kitchen scraps, leaves, and other organic matter to build up good compost.  When it's ready, top off your lawn every couple of months.
• Reduce your mower's footprint-  Rather than automatically starting up your using a gasoline-powered or electric mower, lower the carbon footprint by getting yourself a reel push mowers.  They solve a lot of problems; they're quiet mowers with ultra-sharp blades and cut as well as mechanical mowers. They also give you a better workout and are lightweight, durable, and inexpensive.
