I've really increased my efforts to live green in the past year, mostly in small ways: forgoing plastic shopping bags (either by carrying items in my arms or using reusable canvas bags), replacing incandescent bulbs with CFLs, unplugging the "energy vampires" in the house (cell phone chargers, computer monitors and printers, coffeemakers, etc.), setting the A/C at a higher temperature (75-77), keeping shades down during the sunniest/hottest parts of the day, and driving with a light foot. We also plan on getting a free energy audit to help us find additional ways to cut energy costs and use.

Thanks, Karen! Your comment is very helpful. Smart thinking about the crackers and cookies, etc.

I'm trying to increase the percentage of locally produced food in my family's diet. We've belonged to an organic CSA and partly-locally-supplied winter co-op for several years. We also visit farmers markets, pick-your-own farms, and farm stands during the growing season. Lately I've been looking at the number of ingredients in any processed foods (like crackers, cereal, and granola bars) that we buy, and I choose ones with fewer ingredients. Fewer ingredients means less transporting of goods across the country just to make the product.
